David Spence Hill served as President of UNM from 1919-1927. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 14, 1873. Hill earned his undergraduate degree at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia and graduated with a Ph.D. from Clark University, Massachusetts in 1907. Prior to coming to UNM, he taught classes in education at the University of Illinois. He had also taught at Tulane University, Peabody Teachers College in Nashville, Cornell University, and the University of California at Berkeley. ...

The University of New Mexico was established by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico in 1889. It was to be located in Albuquerque. Elias Stover was appointed the first president. The new institution opened in rented rooms as a summer normal school, June 15, 1892, beginning regular instruction on September 21st in the first building erected on the campus.
